“Dune is not a white saviour movie”

If Aadil had to hear that from one more white person today he was going to lose all of his hair. If he had any he meant.

Online, and in person people were gushing about Dune Part 2 and what an amazing movie it was.

It made Aadil’s blood boil. The entire plot was about a white man turned messiah who lead a north african/arab inspired people trying to fight for their OWN land against a group of imperial invaders stealing their resources.

The man Paul Atreides is supposed to be a nuanced cautionary tale of dangers of messianic figures as he goes on to become Emperor.

I could care less about you digging for nuance, that’s not the way it gets read to people of colour. Yes I have read the books.

Aadil was spending a lot of his time arguing these days with people online about pop culture and Palestine. He wrote this in response to a glowingreview of the movie by a white critic.

Aadil closed his laptop in frustration. He needed to be applying for a job before his saving ran out. But how could he focus when every day more and more Palestinians were dying. How could he have this normal life when we were witnessing a live stream genocide.

It felt hopeless, but part of him knew he couldn’t lose hope. Ramadan was starting next week on the 10th or 11th of March 2024. He looked at the printed job applications pinned on his bulletin board.

He looked at a job posting for Button, and Sutton law. They needed an IT manager.

“The law community, is such a small world. I wonder if I have been black listed.”

This was diverse Toronto. Surely it couldn’t be right?

But he had been talking to friends and seeing stories online from Canadian Muslim Groups talking about the spikes in dismissals and a fear of intimidation for being labelled as Anti-Semitic.

Well there was no helping it now. He needed to apply…

… but one more day of procrastination couldn’t hurt.

He needed to get pet food for Hello Katten Esquire the 4th and he needed to get some stuff for Ramadan.

A message from his friend Soloman, popped up.

Hey I just saw your post about Dune online, I am not sure I agree with everything you are saying about this conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Aadil and Solomon hadn’t talked since Oct 7.

Aadil didn’t feel like talking to him or anyone right now.

He was just going to go get some dates. Simple easy.
